Pregnant woman's lip almost bitten off in horror dog attack

Friday, 2 May 2014

Mum-to-be Siobhan Powell's lip was almost bitten off in a savage attack by a dog in the middle of the street.

The 24-year-old, who is four months pregnant, was walking her own dog when the other pet - thought to be a Rhodesian Ridgeback - went for her.

The snarling animal - off its lead and out of control - leapt at her face and sank its teeth into her bottom lip leaving her with horrifying injuries.

Her own pet - a large bulldog - was so scared it cowered behind her as she was attacked, leaving her needing 17 stitches and the prospect of being scarred for life.

Doctors say if she had not turned away her whole bottom lip would have been bitten off.

"It says something about the size of this dog that mine hid behind me," Siobhan told the Liverpool Echo.

"I was on a long, straight road and I remember seeing this dog in the distance.

“It wasn’t on a lead and didn’t have a collar on. I could tell it wasn’t a friendly dog because its tail wasn’t wagging.

“It got closer and closer, and began snarling with its teeth bared. My dog got scared and hid behind me and it just went for me.

“My first reaction was to push it away and I didn’t realise what had happened until I saw all the blood.

“The doctors told me that if I hadn’t turned my head away, the dog would have taken the whole of my bottom lip off.

“It was very scary, I haven’t walked my dog since.”

She was given a tetanus injection by doctors after the attack a week ago as she walked towards Derby Park in Bootle, Liverpool at 11am.

Merseyside Police are searching for the dog.

Chief Inspector Jerry Harris, said: "The victim was left with a nasty injury to her face which required hospital treatment.

"I'd like to take this opportunity to reassure the community in Bootle that we take incidents like this very seriously and we will act on any information received."
