Former Naivasha MP and current NACADA chairman, John Mututho, owns an FM station called Mururi FM which broadcasts in Kikuyu on 107.3FM. The station covers Nyandarua, Murang’a, Nyeri, Laikipia and Kirinyaga. The station is currently going through a lot with the employees not having been paid since September 2013.
Most of the employees have run away but around 10 – 3 presenters, 3 interns, an HR person, an IT person and 2 security guys – are the only remaining employees. The station which is managed by Mututho’s son Njenga is currently operating on backup after its main transmission in Nairobi was cut off when Kenya Power disconnected electricity to the premises.
The employees feel violated that they are looking for ways of taking legal action against Mututho since he has not honoured agreement in the employment contract. Without settling salary owed, Mututho’s son has now entered a verbal contract with most of the desperate employees demanding that no employee will be paid a retainer but all will be paid according to the money they bring to the struggling entity. Each presenter must bring in at least Ksh 100,000 for them to earn commission.
The station manager Daniel Njenga was recently charged with falsely obtaining money from one Jane Mbaka by pretending that he could sell her a plot. Jane lost Ksh 1.6 million in the deal. Njenga pretended to be the son of one Ruth Katungulu who is the owner of the plot in question.
